This major breakthrough could end PC overheating worries for good

Silicon might be the de facto standard for today's computing, but it might be due for a change if new research from MIT, the University of Houston, and other institutions is to be believed. Cubic boron arsenide, a chemical compound cooked up from a combination of boron and arsenic, could apparently be a better semiconductor, bypassing some of the weaknesses of silicon when it comes to heat sensitivity.  In fact, according to research published in Science ,  Cubic boron arsenide has the "third-best thermal conductivity of any material — next to diamond and isotopically enriched cubic boron nitride". Is this the future? The research said that more work would be needed to determine whether cubic boron arsenide can be "made in a practical, economical form, much less replace the ubiquitous silicon".  But even in the near future, the material could find "some uses where its unique properties would make a significant difference" according to the researc...

Intel Arc graphics cards could be in serious trouble - will Team Blue throw in the towel?

There's finally some news on Intel Arc Alchemist's release date, but not the kind that anybody outside of Nvidia and AMD really wanted to hear: Arc Alchemist and Battlemage might get the ax entirely over unfixable hardware flaws that are kneecapping their performance, and it's threatening to scrap Intel's entire Arc discrete graphics line. This report comes from YouTuber Moore's Law is Dead , and it is a doozy, full of internal politics, bitterness, and recriminations at Intel over the company's graphics unit being unable to actually deliver the discrete graphics cards that have been hyped up for more than a year. I highly suggest you watch the video for all the tea, but the key takeaway is that internal sources at Intel told Moore's Law is Dead that there is a potentially unfixable hardware flaw in the Arc Alchemist GPU that the graphics unit had hoped to address using a driver fix, but that fix isn't working. That's the hardware challenge, repor...

Bad news, Amazon Prime members - one of your best perks is being taken away

Amazon has revealed it is closing its cloud storage platform in another consolidation push from the tech giant. The company has emailed Amazon Drive customers to confirm that the service will be closing at the end of next year. The move comes as part of Amazon's push towards its Amazon Photos service, which will now become a central location for photo and video storage. Amazon Drive closure "Over the last 11 years, Amazon Drive has served as a secure cloud storage service for Amazon customers to back up their files," the company's email to customers read.  "On December 31, 2023, we will no longer support Amazon Drive to more fully focus our efforts on photos and video storage with Amazon Photos. We will continue to provide customers the ability to safely back up, share, and organize photos and videos with Amazon Photos." Users will need to download all their files by the closing date, but existing Amazon users will have had their photo and video fi...

You're finally getting the Google Play Store and apps you deserve

A new day is coming for your Android apps. Google is implementing new Play Store rules for developers as it attempts to stamp out intrusive ads, impersonators, and VPNService misuse. The big changes will roll out incrementally with the first rule going into effect on August 31 and will be complete on July 31, 2023.  Reading through the rules, it appears that some developers on the Play Store were getting away with uncouth practices, but Google is giving them ample time to clean up their act.  The Play Store is also clarifying the language on several policies as it cracks down on misinformation. New rules Starting August 31, apps will no longer be able to impersonate another developer/company nor can an app falsely imply that it's related to something else. Google gives the example of the RSS News Aggregator app created by Google Developer . This is an impersonator because first-party apps on the Play Store are listed under Google LLC. The developers were trying to use Goo...

Apple, Google told to explain themselves after crypto scams hit app stores

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) has sent a letter to the CEOs of Apple and demanding the companies explain how they review and approve mobile apps for cryptocurrency trading and storing.  The letter comes a few days after the FBI warned retail investors that their peers lost more than $42 million on crypto scams in less than a year. “Crypto mobile apps are available to the public through app stores, including Apple’s App Store,” the senator wrote to Cook on Thursday, according to The Verge . “While cryptocurrency apps have offered investors easy and convenient ways to trade cryptocurrency, reports have emerged of fake crypto apps that have scammed hundreds of investors.” Preventing fraud Brown also wants to know if the companies monitor the apps they list in the stores, and how they stop them from “transforming” into phishing scams, as well as if the two companies notified their users about fraudulent crypto apps in the past. “While firms that offer crypto investment and ot...

Google Play Store is blocking full-screen ads, VPN hijacking

Google has announced new Play Store policies for Android developers in an effort to crack down on full-screen ads, VPNs, and fake apps impersonating genuine software. Coming into effect from September 30, 2022, the Play Store will require developers to stop showing “Full-screen interstitial ads,” for example those that show during gameplay or during an app’s loading screen. Additionally, full-screen ads that cannot be closed after 15 seconds shall be banned. The new policy will not include rewarded ads, such as in-app popups that users can opt into in order to unlock in-app content, which will continue to be permitted. Google Play Store developer policies There have been further revisements to the company’s FLAG_SECURE feature, which is intended to protect sensitive data by preventing or obscuring screenshots, and disallowing screen sharing and broadcasting. From November 1, 2022, apps will not be allowed to create workaround for the flagged content. With effect from the same dat...

A clever trick has allowed Microsoft Edge to become faster than ever

Microsoft Edge will soon automatically compress disk caches, helping to improve its performance and giving users a noticeable speed boost. The company says its goal is to “deliver the best performing browser possible on Windows and other platforms,” despite hot competition from Google Chrome (which along with Edge is based on the Chromium platform), and Apple's Safari. Microsoft said that from Edge 102 onwards, its browser would “automatically compress disk caches on devices that meet eligibility checks, to ensure the compression will be beneficial without degrading performance.” Microsoft Edge 102 According to Microsoft, contents in the caches that browsers create are “often highly compressible.” Caches are an important aspect of loading webpages quickly, but the negative effect they can have on a computer’s disk space can slow the actual machine down. By compressing its caches, Microsoft Edge should be able to perform quickly while adding less strain onto the machine. Mi...

Spotify's new personal playlist tool tests the limits of music tastes and friendship

Image
Just in time for International Friendship Day, Spotify is adding yet another personalized playlist. It’s called Friends Mix and it’s made by collecting songs from multiple Blend playlists and then throwing them all together in one big mixtape. It's another way, says Spotify, for people to people discover new tracks. Recommended songs are thrown into Blends that match the creators' taste, but may result in people missing out on potential new favorites. The idea is as your Friends Mix grows, you discover new music, then you add those songs to a separate Blend playlist exposing them to other people. By finding new artists, those friends continue to add new songs to your Friends Mix thereby creating an endless loop of music discovery. (Image credit: Spotify) Made for you The Friends Mix will appear in the Made For You hub, but you will need to create two-person Blends first. These playlists serve as the starting point. Creating one is very simple: all you have to d...

JusTalk has been leaking user info for months

A major chat log database belonging to popular messaging app JusTalk was left unprotected on the web for months, accessible to anyone who knew where to look.  Cybersecurity researcher Anurag Sen uncovered the database, which did not have a password, storing unencrypted data including plenty of personally identifiable information, useful for cybercriminals looking to engage in identity theft , social engineering, or other forms of cybercrime.  The data included the messages themselves, user phone numbers (both sender and receiver), call logs, all sorted out just enough to be able to identify specific people and specific conversations. Millions of potential victims In fact, while going through the logs, TechCrunch says it managed to find a pastor soliciting a sex worker who listed their phone number publicly. The log included the time, location, and price of the meeting.  The database itself is “hundreds of gigabytes” large, and hosted on a Huawei server in China. In...

The cheapest AirPods sales and deals in 07 2022

Image
Whether you're after a powerful set of over-ear cups or the in-ear buds that started it all, AirPods deals can save you plenty of cash on Apple's luxury headphones whatever your budget. Of course, we often see the biggest discounts reserved for those hefty AirPods Max models, but the cheaper second generation and AirPods 3s are still privy to some record breaking savings every now and then.   More affordable AirPods deals have offered savings of up to $80 / £80 in recent months, although these have indeed gone pretty quickly. Considering how premium Apple tech is, these AirPods deals have been pretty damn good in our books, and these once heftily priced earbuds are now much more obtainable. If you've picked up a modern iPhone that's dumped the traditional headphone jack, the Apple AirPods rank amongst the best earphones to pair with your new phone. Although, as they're Bluetooth, you can pair them with plenty of other mobile phones and even laptops. So, how much...

Microsoft is making printing less of a shambles in Windows 11

Microsoft has lifted the lid on a number of updates designed to improve the printing experience across Windows 11 and its office software applications. As explained in a series of new entries to its product roadmap, Microsoft is taking steps to address various issues surrounding incompatibility, waste and security. For example, employees running Windows 11 via virtual desktop will soon gain access to Universal Print, which should reduce complexity associated with sending jobs to office printers. Print-phobia Separately, the company is working on a new system whereby printers will only release documents once a QR code has been scanned inside the Microsoft Office mobile app. Although this will involve a level of added friction, Microsoft says the approach will minimize waste and eliminate the opportunity for snooping on other people’s prints. Anyone who has stepped foot near an office printer will know that the experience is far less straightforward than it should be; the inte...

Hogwarts Legacy art book could offer a hint at the game’s release date

An update to a retail listing for the official Hogwarts Legacy art book might have just offered us a hint at when the game could release. As spotted by Hogwarts Legacy fans on Reddit (via VGC ), the Amazon UK listing for The Art and Making of Hogwarts Legacy: Exploring the Unwritten Wizarding World has been updated with a release date of December 6.  Customers who have pre-ordered the book have also, VGC reports, received emails to state that the release date has been revised to December 6.  amazon_uk_has_the_hogwarts_legacy_art_book_slated from r/HarryPotterGame In light of this updated release date for the official art book, fans are speculating that it could mean that the game will launch, if not exactly on December 6, then perhaps around the same time in early December. At the moment, Hogwarts Legacy only has an official release window of ‘Holiday 2022’. Although the art book for the game won’t necessarily release on the same day as the game, one Reddit user in t...

We finally know what 'Wi-Fi' stands for - and it's not what you think

Let me ask you a question: what does the name “ Wi-Fi ” mean? Considering how omnipresent Wi-Fi connections are, this should be an easy question to answer; especially if you work in the tech industry. If your answer is “wireless fidelity”, that is actually incorrect despite what you were lead to believe, so keep guessing. Could it be “wireless fiber”? “Wishful firedrake”?  Give up? It’s actually a trick question: the name doesn’t mean anything.  An old 2005 interview with one of the founding members of the Wi-Fi Alliance has been making the rounds again and recounts the origin story of Wi-Fi. According to founding member Phil Belanger, the name was picked from a group of ten names that were created by consultancy firm Interbrand. The original name for Wi-Fi was “IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence” and the Alliance knew that name couldn’t be used. They needed something catchier if the standard was going to be widely adopted, so "Wi-Fi" was picked. Mistakes were made If you s...

Data breaches are more expensive, and more annoying, than ever

Data breaches are costlier and more impactful than ever before, a wide-ranging study by IBM has found. Surveying 550 organizations from all over the world, the company claims that the global average cost of a data breach has now hit $4.35 million - an all-time high, and  up 13% compared to the same period two years ago. However, it’s not just the affected businesses that feel the sting of a data breach - everyone else does, too, albeit passively. IBM says that there is a chance that the rising costs of goods and services could be tied back to these incidents, as well. The company bases these conclusions on the fact that almost two-thirds (60%) of the respondents claimed to have raised the prices of their products or services, due to a data breach.  Paying ransomware doesn't pay What’s more, if a company suffers one data breach, it’s bound to suffer another. More than four in five (83%) have experienced more than just one breach in their lifetime, the report found. Then, t...

Facebook wants to kill the leap second - a scoundrel messing with our lives

Until today, I bet you never heard of leap seconds -- seconds, not years. Ever since 1972, we've been occasionally adding a second to our global clock to account for variations in the speed of the earth's rotation. As it slows down, we add a second. So far, we've added 27. You might think this has no impact on you (or be thrilled that you've got an extra second free), but if you remember being unable to access Reddit in 2012 or dozens of Cloudflare-supported websites that went offline in 2017, then you've stared into the cold, hard face of a leap second. Meta, a company not necessarily known for always having our best interests at heart, is, it turns out, no fan of leap seconds. Meta wants to do away with them, and made its case this week in an extensive blog post on the topic. This isn't personal, Meta says (though it might be a little self-serving): The company's global network faces the same challenges as all others when it comes to this seemingly ha...
